Oxbow Live: Maine Plays Springsteen’s Nebraska

On Sept 30, 1982, Bruce Springsteen released an album that puzzled fans and critics alike. Nebraska was recorded at home on a four-track cassette recorder. The songs captured in his bedroom are dark, moody, and riddled with imperfections. For a bona fide rockstar whose previous album, The River, reached #1 on the US charts, this was a surprising and bold move. Gone are the anthemic choruses and full-band swagger. Springsteen, seemingly on-top of the music world, had stumbled into a dark place and Nebraska reflects that moment in time.

Now songwriters all around the world point to this record as an influential milestone in their creative journey. Here in Maine and on the anniversary of its release, four of those songwriters—Wildflower, Luke Kalloch, Becca Biggs, and Tremolo Fields—will take turns playing the record from start to finish and share snippets of how this record called to them.
